Have you heard about the $100 laptop for kids in developing countries? Well, now you can own one of these awesome, free to the poor computers for only $350!
Designed for elementary school children, it comes with free Linux software (J will like that) as well as a battery that can run for 12 hours after being charged via pull cord or hand crank. It can also "withstand severe weather common in areas of Asia, Africa and Latin America" and "features a high-resolution display that can be read in direct sunlight." {quote from the AP}
Ok – on a serious note [if there's such a thing]: I have been following the development of this laptop for a few years. The company behind the laptops is One Laptop Per Child Foundation. They are a non-profit organization that wanted to develop and give away a free and durable laptop to those children who might never see a computer. At first, I was like: "If kids don't have food to eat – why do they need a laptop!!!"
[@more@]However, I have slowly begun to see the bright side to the plan. The kids who receive the laptops will be able to develop valuable job skills that may go a long way in securing a paying job. If receive a computer helps them get a job later on in life – well, praise the Lord.
As for buying it laptop for $350, that was a new development that broke today on FoxNews. The thought is that a lot of younger kids here in the States could benefit from such a laptop. Plus the Foundation would receive a nice profit that would go back into their funds to give away the laptops to those over seas [ie. production cost = $100; $250~ profit].
Who knows, it may work….
Thats cool. I also have been following that project since it’s inception but I hadn’t heard about them trying to sell it here in the states.
